What is GreenEarth?
Green Earth is an environmentally friendly, silicone based dry cleaning solvent manufactured by, and sold under licence from the Green Earth Cleaning company.
Its full chemical name is decamethylcyclopentasiloxane, or Siloxane D5 in short.
How does Green Earth differ from solvents used by other dry cleaners?
Most traditional dry cleaners in South Africa use a chemical named perchloroethylene, short named PERC or PCE.
PERC is a an extremely hazardous solvent banned in many European countries, and US states for its toxic affect on both the human body and environmental eco-systems.
It is considered a volatile organic compound (VOC); and easily breaches the blood / brain barrier.
In terms of cleaning, it is an aggressive high KB value solvent, which rapidly fades the colours, and deteriorates the make-up of garment textiles.
The cleaning power of most dry cleaning solvents is measured by their Kauri-Butanol (KB) values; PERC has a very high value of 95.
Green Earth is a natural inorganic pigment, and its classification does not conform to the above measuring scale; but generally cleans with substantially more gentle cleaning power.
In our opinion we estimate an equivalent KB value of around 20 for GreenEarth
This allows much more delicate garments with decorative embellishments as well as regular garments to be cleaned using its process.
This includes the like of couture, Indian sarees, lehenga cholis, salwar kameez, Nehru suits, ball gowns and the like, As well as suits, trousers, jackets, coats, leathers, furs, and the like to be cleaned in a gentle, sustainable method, for longer lasting use.
What about other cleaning methods?
Professional Wet Cleaning is a process used by modern dry cleaning service providers either as a stand-alone service, or in conjunction with conventional solvent cleaning processes.
Professional Wet Cleaning uses water, and specialized detergents and agents, to clean garments in a washer-extractor programmed specifically in a manor created for the Wet Cleaning process.
Although most modern garments may be cleaned in this process, more delicate textiles such as silks, cashmeres, some wools, some blended textiles, amongst others, may be averse to being submerged and cleaned in any water based solution; which may cause shrinkage and distortion of the textile, and by extension damage to the garment itself.
